National History

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by Seven Educators.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development, and education of youth are the hallmarks of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.

Founded in the height of racial tension, the Seven Educators overcame great adversity to create this phenomenal organization. Sigma Gamma Rho is the only sorority within the Divine 9 that was not founded on the campus of Howard University as well as the only sorority within the Divine 9 to be founded on a predominantly white institution.

The courage, determination, and strength of our Seven Pearls has allowed Sigma Gamma Rho to grow into an international sisterhood with thousands of women of all races and creeds that come together to make a change in their respective communities.
